Crab Creek

Where: Crab Creek
Hatches: BWO's
Report:
Most of the adult redbands are done spawning and the high water levels should have made for a good reproductive season. The extreme upper end [where our lease is] above Rock Creek is still very high but has about 2 feet of visibility. On March 31st we fished the ranch and in a few hours of midday fishing landed about 25 fish up to and slightly over 20 inches.  Downstream of Rock Creek it is a different story with the amount of mud increasing as you head down to the BLM stretch below. There is lots of water now which means the adult fish are spread out but if you find them they can still be caught on just about anything fished deep. We tend to fish big streamers or a mid sized heavy nymph with a brassie trailer in these high muddy water conditions.  Even with the mud, the cloudy days can produce some good blue winged olive action for mostly smaller fish. Even though it goes against conventional wisdom, we find the biggest fish ready to chase big steelhead sized string leaches in water temps as low as the mid 30's. Fishing will range from iffy for the next few days to very good within the next couple of weeks so don't miss those first few good days. Be aware that there is little public water on Crab Creek above Odessa so make sure that you know where you are. Please don't harvest one of these rare desert jewels we call redbands. Crab Creek needs every one of its native fish and while the state may allow a limit, it is in the best interest of the creek and for the good of our fishing to practice catch and release.

Coeur d'Alene River

Where: NF Coeur d'Alene - Between Enaville & Cataldo
Hatches: Skawala's, BWO's, March Browns
Report:
As the last of the nasty spring squalls subside, the Coeur d’Alene River is starting to really fish. The bugs and tactics for this time of year are as varied as the weather. If you have spent your whole winter fishing subsurface, you are probably ready to throw a dry fly. The afternoons on the Cd’A will offer a few different options for surface action; blue wings, grey drakes, march browns, and yes, the infamous skwalla will be on the menu. If you haven’t had your fill of nymphing; prince nymphs, 20 inchers, pat’s rubberlegs, and san juans will get the job done. I would recommend fishing between Enaville and Cataldo. If you find fish on the surface…DON’T LEAVE THEM! My biggest recommendation is to get out there and wet a line.
