Lake Rufus Woods is a large reservoir formed by Chief Joseph Dam. It is located on the Columbia River in central Washington. Several businesses have private aquaculture operations on the lake where triploid rainbows for the restaurant trade are raised. Like all net pen operations, escapees are inevitable and occasionally a pen will tear and literally thousands of fish will escape into the lake. These fish are incredibly fat and will average over three pounds although, fish in the fifteen pound range are frequently landed. Fall, winter and spring are considered the prime months for fly fishing Lake Rufus Woods.
Steve Moran, a sought after custom fly rod builder from Spokane, is the leading expert in fly fishing this reservoir. Steve has been guiding on the Lake for well over a decade. Fly fishing is concentrated mostly in the uppermost twenty miles of the reservoir. Water levels fluctuate almost hourly, based on power generation demand. This makes for an extremely complicated set of fishing conditions. It is very similar to tidal fluctuations in saltwater only that it occurs more frequently. Steve is well versed in these unique conditions and how it affects the fish. He has pontoon boats available for clients to use as well as specialty fast sinking lines to fish the deep water of Lake Rufus Woods.
Lodging is available within thirty minutes of the fishery and Steve can guide up to three guests per day. Larger groups can also be accommodated with additional guide(s). If you want a chance at the trout of a lifetime in a big water environment, contact us for a trip with Steve. As with all of our guide trips, we provide terminal tackle, delicious meals, knowledgeable assistance and a level of service found nowhere else.
