Double Steelhead Hook Up
Steelhead

The Snake River and its’ tributary, the Grande Ronde River; are two of the finest fall and winter steelhead fisheries in the Pacific Northwest. October is the beginning of "prime time" for each river with favorable water temperatures and flows. Fishing conditions are generally stable through Thanksgiving. Winter fishing is somewhat less predictable due to variable water conditions. However, if conditions are right, winter can provide great fishing during the least pressured time of the year.

The average Steelhead from either river is typically in the five to eight pound range with the real possibility of fish up to fifteen pounds. Many of our fish, as you can see from the gallery, are native and absolutely gorgeous.

Double Spey Outfitters has extensive experience on our local steelhead waters and truly enjoy sharing this tradition laden sport with our guests. As a general rule, it is far less complicated than trout fishing and our novice clients learn the basics quickly. Fish numbers can vary greatly not only from year to year, but also from week to week. Over the season we typically average over a hookup per guest, per day. Normally we let the fishing and the fishing pressure dictate which river and location we will guide on in any given day. While I am a traditionalist at heart and prefer swinging flies on a dry line, I also understand the art and success of down and across nymphing.

Centuries old traditions of proper angler rotation through runs hang on by a thread in our sport. As a result all of our guides insist on the time tested rules of stepping downstream through each run and never entering a run below another angler.

We are proficient instructors of both one and two hand casting, classic and modern Spey fly construction and offer several steelhead schools each fall. Refer to our school page for more details. We also have a substantial quiver of rods and reels for rent should you need them. Our fall weather is great and the winters in the valleys offer mild spells of good winter fishing. Both canyons are filled with rugged, semi arid scenery and the wildlife from Bighorn Sheep to Mule Deer is plentiful. Lodging is available a short distance away in Clarkston, Washington or we can provide overnight accommodations in our traditional wood stove heated wall tents. What could be better than our delicious meals combined with the talkative coyotes and the prospect of tight lines in the morning? Our steelhead photo gallery will give you an idea of the fish we catch and surrounding scenery. To book a guided steelhead trip or for additional information contact Double Spey Outfitters today.
