When we guide on this scenic North Idaho cutthroat stream, we work as employees of Coeur d’ Alene River Big Game Outfitters, owned by Gary and Jan Sylte and their son Troy. (ID Outfitter License #4338) Idaho law requires that all payments be made directly to the outfitter.
The season usually kicks off in late May and continues through the fall. Drive time from the Coeur d’ Alene area is about an hour. We have many options at our disposal on the upper river system and it’s tributaries. The middle section of the river has good road access while the upper section and tributaries offer excellent hike-in opportunities. Full day walk and wade trips can be done on the middle section or as day hikes into the roadless upper river or tributaries like Independence or Trail Creek. We also offer overnight options both on the main river and the more remote areas accessed via foot. Pricing on overnight trips is on a quote only basis as we have a cabin available as well as tenting options.
Of all of the North Idaho westslope cutthroat streams, the CDA river system produces opportunities for the largest fish. We see several fish each season that are in the 20 inch and over range. These are incredibly beautiful fish and they fight well in the emerald green water they call home. There is plenty of dry fly fishing available throughout the season but frequently our largest fish are caught on nymphs and streamers. The hike in section of the main river has the most breathtaking scenery of any trout stream in the west. Towering cliffs with deep pools beneath them, abundant wildlife, an incredible diversity of wildflowers, dense groves of western red cedar; all topped off by the lightly fished trout stream meandering through the valley.
Although our focus is on fly fishing, we also offer hikes and eco tours in this picturesque area. Like our fishing trips we can tailor the day to your needs. Everything from power backpacking trips to tours involving short walks from the vehicle. Hiking during huckleberry season at the higher elevations even provides for endless snacking. The pricing on these trips is the same as our fishing trips and our guides are as knowledgeable on general nature topics as they are on fly fishing.
We have rod, reel, and wader rentals available for those who need them and this river is especially kind to beginners with its’ abundance of fish. Be sure to check out this fisheries photo gallery as mere words cannot fully describe the beauty of these fish and the surroundings. As with all of our guide trips, we provide excellent meals and all terminal tackle is included. Our current licensing allows us a maximum of four anglers or hikers per day.
