Ice Fishing

For the fly fishing purists who choose not to partake in other types of angling, please ignore this page. Be advised however, that it's your loss! Believe it or not, ice fishing for panfish out of an ice house is pretty damn exiting. That being said, we’d never think of disgracing a trout by subjecting him to being a maggot chaser under the ice.

In all seriousness, winter is a fly fishing guides off-season and is the perfect time to play. Once you experience ice fishing, it's all over except for your equipment purchase. For many of us it becomes an addiction almost to the level of steelheading. Most of what we do in pursuit of trout with a fly rod is in an attempt to be in harmony with nature. It is a very intimate fishing experience. Ice fishing begins and ends as the polar opposite. Almost by definition, it is about the pure defiance of nature. Ten degree air temperature, thirty mile per hour wind and the liquid we normally fish is now a solid with strength greater than asphalt. Even with the harshness of winter, you are perfectly comfortable inside a heated ice house, still able to pursue the sport of fishing. If the fish are feeding shallow, the darkened interior of an ice house allows you to see the fish take bait. It's sort of like watching a DVD through a six inch hole.

For the same amount of money that buys a high end fly rod, you can be outfitted with an ice house, hand auger, sled, heater and the other necessary equipment to get started right. Not only is ice fishing a thrill for adults, it is also great for the kids since you can regulate the ice house temperature and they can learn the basics in a single day.

We fish several different Northeastern Washington lakes depending on the ice conditions, fish size and numbers. In addition to panfish trips, we offer night trips to beautiful Sullivan Lake for Burbot or freshwater Ling as they are called locally. The season usually kicks off around the first of the year and lasts about two months. Our ice fishing trips are similar to our full day fly fishing trips in that we provide a great lunch, beverages and terminal tackle with the bonus of your rod and reel setup. Whether you are passing through or live in the area and have ever considered ice fishing, give us a call. This really is a fantastic way not only to beat the winter blues, but to actually look forward to winter knowing that ice fishing is just around the corner. We place a major emphasis on safety for our guests and we have never fallen through the ice.
